The Ursa

The Ursa (latin for bear) get’s its name due to its resemblance to the Native American’s stylized depiction of the great grizzly bear.  I’ve always been a fan of the single cut shape and this was one of my first designs penned when I was designing my own.  Feedback from friends, players and fellow luthiers was so positive that I quickly adapted this as my signature bass.

I offer all my basses, including The Ursa, in 4, 5 or 6 string versions, fretted or fretless.

My preference is for a fanned fret layout, with a fan-scale of 33” to 35”, although I can do regular fixed scale as required.  My philosophy is to build what my client requires.

I start The Ursa with a cedar or spruce core, and then add a figured top and back to that.  This keeps the weight down, but provides a density that gives my basses a resonance and punch that is very much in line with my building philosophy of trying to do avoid a J or a P clone.  In saying that, I’ll happily shape a neck to a familiar ‘V’, ‘C’ or ‘U’ shape.

Getting the instrument to fit you is what we are all about.
